'Windsor' Cast Creates Moments To Treasure
DENVER (CBS4) ―
The story goes Shakespeare wrote "The Merry Wives of Windsor" in just two weeks after receiving a royal command from the queen. It certainly seems that way: it's Shakespeare's tightest, sharpest comedy. But it's also sloppy, padded and wanders through its own plot.
But the right cast, like the one now on stage at The Stage Theater in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, can create moments worth treasuring along the way.
Michael Santo is simply amazing as Doctor Caius. He creates a Clouseau-like character who out-Clouseau's Clouseau.
Brian Keith Russell and John Hutton have some wonderful interplay, but it is Sharon Washington and Kathleen McCall as the merry wives who steal the show with some of the best physical comedy on stage all year.
There are Shakespearean shows where you laugh along with the Bard, the wit and style of the written comedy. And there are those, like "The Merry Wives," where you laugh almost in spite of the material. This cast wrings every possible laugh out of the show and it is a delight.
"The Merry Wives of Windsor" runs through April 19.
