Geology Is Unique At Lory State Park

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ― A hike through Lory State Park west of Fort Collins offers lessons in geography, especially when the hike is led by geologist Andrew Warnock.

"Lory State Park is one of the greatest places in northern Colorado to study geology ... to try and understand lengths of geologic history," he said on recent hike with Colorado Getaways.

"There are almost 1.4 billion years of geologic history recorded in the rocks of Lory State Park."

Lines of erosion tell the story of the erosion of an ancient mountain range called the Ancestral Rocky Mountains, a range which was uplifted 300 million years ago.

"We're talking about reading the rocks and reading the geology, looking at the rocks and trying to understand the history and learn what these rocks are telling us."

"It's very similar to reading a book. As long as you learn the language of the rocks, you can understand the history of planet."

A lot of concepts in geology are clearly illustrated in the park, giving students a real hands-on lesson.

"We live in the state of Colorado which has some of the best scenery in the nation, and understanding how that scenery forms adds another level to your understanding and appreciation of our beautiful state."
