New DAM Exhibit Was 10 Years In The Making
'Inspiring Impressionism' At Denver Art Museum
DENVER (CBS4) ―
After a 10 year effort a new exhibit has debuted at the Denver Art Museum that aims to answer the question "Who inspired the Impressionists?" The exhibit places works of the Old Masters next to the Impressionist paintings they influenced.
"It's been something has been talked about in art history lectures, it's been in textbooks ... it's never been done on this scale ever," said exhibit curator Timothy Standring.
Standring is the man who spent a decade putting it together works from 72 collections around the world for this exhibit.
"It blended in wonderfully for most of their patrons in the late 19th century who wanted to have impressionist painters who marry with most of their existing artwork, " he said of those collections.
The exhibit includes the work of Manet, Money, Cezanne and their take on the inspiration of the Old Masters. "It's a great opportunity to see how Impressionists reacted to the whole university of Old Master Paintings across Europe."
The prizes of the exhibit include Van Der Neers' "Skaters On A Frozen Canal" hung right next to Renior's "Skaters In the Bois du Bolougne." The contrast shows not only the difference in technique but also shows how Renior was reacting to the Old Master.
