Notable Golden Landmark Goes Into Hiding

'Welcome' Arch Will Be Refurbished

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS) ― A beloved piece of Colorado's culture has gone into hiding in Golden.

The "Welcome" arch on Washington Avenue that has welcomed visitors to the city for almost 60 years was taken down on Monday for a full cleaning job and repairs.

Crews plan to refurbish the 60-year-old welcome sign for an extended period and have it back up in time for the city's Christmas celebrations.

Golden raised money to have the arch refurbished for the city's 150th anniversary celebration next year. While it has been spruced up before it has never needed a complete overhaul until now.

"It's going to look the same. The lettering will be the same. We don't want to change that, that's the history of it," city spokesman Mark Dugan said.

A pair of Golden men put up the arch in 1949 as a way to capitalize on Golden's western flavor. Shop owner Sharill Briggs told CBS4 her father helped with putting it up.

"They really felt this is where the West remained and they should have something that stated that fact," she said.

Briggs says tourists take pictures of themselves with the arch in the background every day.

"It's something we are proud of and we can identify Golden with the welcome arch," she told CBS4.
