Colorado Artists Show Off Clay Skills
GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) ―
The Foothills Art Center in Golden is showing what Colorado artists can create when their thoughts turn to mud. The center is currently hosting an exhibit titled "Colorado Clay" featuring 12 artists.
Marie Gibbons is one of those artists. She makes her art by pouring liquid clay into a mold in a method called "slip casting," but her work is not exactly traditional.
"I think as an artist, you're always trying to re-invent things," she said, "to look at things a different way." For Gibbons that means an unusual vision of clay dolls.
"I feel like it's a direct link from brain to fingers to medium," is how she explains her creations. "It channels through really well and it connects. We understand each other, the clay and I."
"When people hear the word 'clay' they have a preconceived idea of what they're going to see and I think there are some surprises here," said exhibit curator Michael Chavez.
"Here" is that exhibit at Foothills Art Center. Shelly Schrieber is another artist whose work is on display. "At first glance these are teapots," said Chavez, "but she takes them to a place that's beyond function."
The 12 artists work hard to push visitors perceptions about creations in clay. "There is a whimsical nature to the pieces chosen for this show. this exhibition is really aimed at all the things that clay can do."
