Anglers Await Opening Day At Spinney Mountain
SOUTH PARK, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Spinney Mountain Reservoir near South Park is the only gold medal fishery in the state to have an "official" opening day. Usually opening day comes in mid-April but the record snow this year is pushing it back a bit.
Still, anglers will flock to the reservoir the night before the opening to be among the first to get into the reservoir. Once the gates are open, it's a race to the water to see who can hit the water with the first cast.
Part of what attracts anglers is the idea that the trout have the winter to get fat while forgetting about flies and lures. Spinney Mountain Reservoir closed for the season Nov. 25, 2007.
Usually fishing behavior calls for the fishermen to hide their favorite spots and to move well away from others, but at least on opening day, fishing in a crowd isn't so bad especially if the fish are biting.
Park rangers are monitoring the ice melt and will set an opening date as soon as possible. You can find out what it is by calling (719) 748-3401.
