Colorado Offers Plenty Of Vacation For The Money
DENVER (CBS4) ―
The high price of gas and concerns about the credit crunch might keep some families at home this summer, but travel agents are offering plenty of suggestions for economical vacations.
Thea Foley of Sheridan Travel stopped by the CBS4 Morning News Sunday to talk options with anchors Shaun Boyd, Arturo Santiago and Jennifer Zeppelin.
"If you have a family demographic of at least four members, you might want to consider a driving vacation this year," said Foley. "The only way to really get the best buys on airlines is to plan early."
Her other cost-saving advice is to narrow your choices of destinations. "Don't have such a world view of what you want to do for this family vacation," she said. "You can keep within your budget."
"There's a lot of choices depending on the ages of the children. South Dakota has wonderful features that are just a few hours away."
And Foley said families can find plenty to do without leaving the state.
"Here in Colorado you could make a wonderful tour of the state. Refresh your memories of what you did growing up or as a young family."
"We have beautiful destinations and if you plan ahead for your hotel stays, you could do a considerable amount of savings."
Foley also advises heading west ... all the way to the coast. "There are all kinds of opportunities there, all along from north to south. Our neighbors in Canada are very anxious to have us visit there. You can do a nice little driving vacation along the Pacific Coast Highway and head up to Vancouver or take the ferry over to British Columbia. It's a wonderful family adventure."
Foley said consulting a travel agent can draw attention to destinations and attractions that might fall by the wayside.
Her final piece of advice is to leave wriggle room in scheduling and budgeting. "Leave room for spontaneity. These are the things that create the best memories."
