A unique race at Highline State Park brings cyclists from all over to participate. It features 85 teams and starts in the middle of the night.
Fruita Colorado starts at midnight. It's 18 hours long.
"It's unique," said one of the organizers. "Instead of starting in the day and then riding into the night we start in the middle of the night and riding into the daytime. It's really given us a unique position and a unique appeal, something people remember."
"The fun thing here is that the state park has really been accommodating and allowed us to develop and allowed us to develop trails that are purely fun to ride a mountain bike on."
Organizers say the course isn't all that hard. There aren't any really big climbs.
"It's just fun the whole way around," one participant said. "It's fast and people really enjoy the experience of riding this loop."
"This is the first time I've ridden this trail," said another participant. "They're fun. I think I'm a convert. It's smooth, fun and if you just want to go out for some cruisin' it's awesome."
"They're great," said another rider. "They're fabulous, really well taken care of."
Another thing that makes the even special is camping out in such a beautiful place. And yet as soon as riders leave the campground you're riding on dirt, single path trail.
Highline Park also features the only lake in Mesa County that's warm enough for people to boat, ski and swim.
But organizers say it's the people who and ride in Fruita is what brings the soul to the whole place.
