Colorado State Parks Celebrate 50th Anniversary

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ― Colorado State Parks is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

A birthday party was planned Wednesday at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado's first state park. The key attraction at the park is the reservoir, but like all the state parks, it offers lots more, including model airplane flying and horseback riding.

State parks can be found all over Colorado. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the system, a park passport can be downloaded to keep track of park visits. The passport includes a map of all the parks and a place to get stamps after each visit to a state park. Park managers hope it will challenge everyone to take advantage of the parks in their own backyard and around the state.

The first 200 people to get all the stamps and send in the passport get a sling pack to help carry all park supplies.

Since it was created in 1959, over 40 parks -- almost a quarter-million acres -- have been added to the system. The parks are supported in part by proceeds from Colorado Lottery sales.

Get a "Park Passport" and collect stamps from all 42 parks. Go to a special section of the Colorado State Parks Web site to learn more.
