Choreographer Provides Comic Dance To Production

DENVER (CBS4) ― The theater is the kind of business which attracts plenty of characters and not all of them are on the stage.

Take Gina Cerimle-Mechley for instance. She's the choreographer for the production of "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" coming to the Stage Theater of the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

"It's such a comedic show that the biggest thing we're focusing on is vaudeville," Cerimle-Mechley said.

And that focus on comedy means there is plenty of room to turn traditions inside out.

"I'm also enjoying taking every musical theater generic step and poking fun at it. It is very standardized. You've got your box step. You've got your jazz hands with your spirit fingers."

Cermile-Mechley is one of the only women teachers in the American Society of American Fight Directors, and that background gives her a different sense of body movement.

"I do a lot of clowning, a lot of pratfalls (and) comic violence so I put it together in the dance choreography."

All of that fighting and comedy add up to a refreshing change for the Denver theater scene.

"A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" opens at the Stage Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex May 17.
