Nat'l Performing Arts Convention Comes To Denver

DENVER (CBS4) ― The Democrats aren't the only ones aiming for a Colorado convention -- the arts community is as well. The National Performing Arts Convention hits Denver Tuesday.

These arts conventions are planned for once every four years. Only one held before was in 2004 in Pittsburgh. This year Denver won the honor. Now, along 4,000 arts types meeting and talking, there will be performances with Denver arts groups leading the way.

There will be dance and music and theater during the convention, and there will be Side Show.

Side Show is the show that gave Phamaly, the physically handicapped actors and musical artists league its start, and made the national standard for companies around the country.

"It's not about sympathy; it's about performing," CBS4 Critic at Large Greg Moody said. "The love of performing (and) the love of live theater. Both the audience and the cast win."

Side Show is held in the Space Theater of the Performing Arts Complex the whole month of June.

Other Shows

Opera Colorado will present the contemporary opera, "Nixon in China," in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

The Denver Center will continue its run of "3 Mo' Divas" in the stage theater of the Performing Arts Complex with three magnificent female voices performing everything from opera to Broadway and R&B to gospel.

Additional Entertainment

Turns out, pandas rule when it comes to the box office. From the movies to lots of offerings from the theater, you'll find plenty to do in Moody's Picks.
