Firing Musician Over Song Backfires For Aspen

ASPEN, Colo. (CBS4) ―
The Aspen Ski Company went into a quick back-peddle when news got out that they had fired a singer whose music criticized Aspen locals.
Firing him might have backfired and the singer now has a bigger following than ever before.
Folk singer Dan Sheridan's song "Big Money" is a poignant commentary on the town's exclusive and unattainable image.
"I just felt that this was a sentiment that a lot people have here in town, you know, that the town is being squeezed out," Sheridan said. "Somebody had to write the song."
The song has gained a cult following from Coloradans, but on Dec. 31 an Aspen Ski Company co-executive wasn't so impressed with what he heard and had Sheridan fired during a performance at a company bar in Snowmass.
"He didn't think the lyrics were appropriate for the people who where there," Jeff Hanle with Aspen Ski Company said.
Big money is something Sheridan doesn't have -- his family lives in a trailer park below Aspen's million-dollar homes, where he struck a sensitive chord with the song as news of his firing spread quickly.
"Several of us thought right away it was a mistake," Hanle said.
Sheridan has been re-hired as long as his "Big Money" isn't played at the ski company.
The controversy has brought him new-found publicity and it's a song that Aspen won't soon forget.
"I never had so much press when I got hired," he said. "Much better being fired, I guess."
Sheridan has "Big Money" on his own CD and says he'll still play it at other places in town.
