Beckham Expected Back In Colorado After 100th Cap
Soccer Star Played In Paris Wednesday, Then Returns To U.S.
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Soccer superstar David Beckham is scheduled to be in Colorado Saturday with the Los Angeles Galaxy for an MLS season opening game against the Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. That's after he played in an international friendly between England and France in Paris on Wednesday.
The mid-week international game and the travel that follows has some observers wondering how much Beckham will play in Colorado Saturday night. The game will be televised, which could increase the chances he'll get in the game.
Beckham has also failed to play in two previous appearances in Colorado. He was an observer of the MLS All-Star game in Commerce City last summer shortly after joining the Galaxy. Then he was injured before the team's regular season appearance in Colorado late last August.
Beckham was recalled by England early this week after managers saw him play in a friendly pre-season game last weekend and decided he was in good enough condition to join the national team for the game against France. He wasn't added to the roster for another international friendly last month in London.
England's 1-0 exhibition loss to France Wednesday was Beckham's 100th international appearance.
The Los Angeles Galaxy star said the wave he gave when he walked off during the game was just an acknowledgment of the standing ovation that even French fans gave him. Beckham maintained he has not intention of quitting the English national team.
"I don't know where the rumors came from, but they weren't from me," Beckham said. "It is 100 not out as far as I am concerned. The wave at the end was not a goodbye, just a thank you.
"The reception when I came off from both sets of fans was amazing. You obviously expect it off your own fans and I thank them for that, but from the French people as well it was an amazing standing ovation."
Although Beckham didn't even have a shot on goal and collected a yellow card for a foul on French goal scorer Franck Ribery, he was satisfied with his performance.
"The most important thing for me was to prove my fitness and I felt that I did that. I felt very fresh and a lot better than I thought I would," he said after playing 62 minutes at the Stade de France. "As much as you work hard in preseason, there is nothing better than playing in games, and I enjoyed it."
Beckham was scheduled to fly back to Los Angeles Thursday, train with the Galaxy Friday and then fly with the team to Colorado for Saturday's game.
The Galaxy's Landon Donovan was also overseas to play in a friendly between the United States and Poland on Wednesday. He's was also expected to fly back Thursday and join Los Angeles before heading to Colorado.
Donovan, who became the all-time leading scorer in U.S. history in January, is also on the verge of his 100th international appearance, having earned 99 so far during his national team career.
