Denver Fills With Color At Denver 'Paint-In'

Written by CBS4 Critic at Large Greg Moody
(CBS4) It was a day to listen to music, the music of John Lennon and others. It was a day to celebrate peace. It was a day to paint in the Colorado sunshine.

The Imagine Peace Paint-In was a day long celebration of music, painting and peace in Civic Center Park, held for this first time on what would have been John Lennon's 68th birthday. Event organizer Dana Cain told me, it was Lennon who sparked her thinking of the event.

"Oh, it was John Lennon all the way," Cain said. "I was watching the movie 'The US vs. John Lennon,' and started thinking, how could we incorporate all that John and Yoko did in terms of peace and music and do it in a fun way?"

What it became was a day long event that featured a number of local bands, vendors promoting everything from peace symbols to political candidates, food, artwork and fun for just about everyone.

Children stood at the base of a solar powered bubble machine and chased soap bubbles across the park, while others stood in the center of a large peace symbol made completely out of pairs of Crocs. Meanwhile, artists stood around the park, taking the beauty of the day and scenery, and turning it into artwork.

"It's a beautiful day to paint," said artist Cheryl St. John. "And, since I love both the idea of peace and what John Lennon gave the world, I decided this was a perfect day to come out and paint."

St. John is a plein aire artist, an artist who works mainly outdoors, in the fresh air, capturing landscapes and the beauty of the world around her.

Also on hand was May Pang, a girlfriend of John Lennon's in the 70s, who has just written a new book about John. When I talked with her, I asked, what would John have thought of all this?

May Pang smiled and said, "John would have been thrilled. But, he wouldn't have liked so much fuss on his birthday. He wasn't much for fuss."

Maybe.

But I still think he would have loved the day in the Colorado sunshine.
