Contractor Chosen To Review Christo River Proposal

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) ― A final environmental impact statement is expected in 2011 for an art proposal by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude for the Arkansas River.

The couple, who erected thousands of fabric panels in New York's Central Park in 2005, have proposed suspending silvery fabric over sections of the river from Canon City to Salida for their "Over the River" project.

The Bureau of Land Management last month announced it had chosen third-party contractor EDAW-AECOM to analyze environmental impacts of the artists' proposal. The BLM expects the final environmental impact statement to be done by April 2011.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are funding EDAW-AECOM's contract. Their team has estimated total costs for "Over the River" at $50 million.
