50 Cent Joins Dallas In Fighting Teen Violence

DALLAS (CBS) ― Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway continues to lead a campaign of discussion and activism on teen violence.

Today Caraway added a little street credibility to his efforts and maybe a little controversy as well, by teaming with the world famous rapper 50 Cent, reports CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas.

A rap star with millions in his pocket and New York street hustler in his background showed up at Dallas' KBFB '97.9 The Beat' radio studios and rubbed elbows with the city's voice against sagging pants and thug culture.

"Now, pull your pants up. I'll make sure they hear me say it. Pull your pants up," the rapper said to the radio audience as he was being introduced, on air, to Caraway.

50 Cent is the poster child of the trouble Caraway says he's trying to confront and the rapper says he believes young people should do what he's done -- change.

As 50 Cent, one of the most successful music artists today, took to the airwaves Friday morning he pushed and promoted his new music and new movie. But the rapper stood side-by-side with Caraway, supporting Caraway's teen town hall sessions.

"[I want to] provide an opportunity for them to see that there's other options and other ways to actually go," 50 Cent explained. "I want to be a big example of how you can do positive things."

50 Cent is not just a rapper, he's an enterprise. With 25 million record sold he's also starred in movies, is an author and has a perfume line.

But the music star, known for his 'rep' as teen drug dealer and victim of street gun violence, somehow became the one-day spokesman for Caraway's campaign against the very things 50 Cent is so noted for.

The contrast is exactly what Caraway wanted. "The mission is to be able to reach the young folks, in their language, with things and people that excite them that they listen to," he explained.

The teen town hall sessions have become campaigns focused on everything, including the trend of wearing sagging pants, to gangs and teen violence.

On November 22, Caraway and 97.9 are hosting a town hall meeting on teen violence.  The event will be held at the Radio One studios in Dallas' Valley View Mall from 7pm-9pm.

And since they want young people involved… getting 50 Cent to give his seal of approval doesn't hurt.
