Manufacturer: Denver Orders 88 Pepper-Pellet Guns

Section: Denver 2008 DNC Convention Section

DENVER (AP) ― A manufacturer of a non-lethal gun that shoots balls filled with a pepper spray-like substance says Denver is asking that an order of 88 guns be delivered in advance of the Democratic National Convention.

Denver has declined to release details of how it's spending a $50 million grant for security, saying releasing the information is "contrary to the public interest."

A statement released Monday by the Louisville-based Security With Advanced Technology Inc., however, listed the Denver police department's order.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said Wednesday that the city will not comment on weapons purchases or its tactical strategies.

Thousands of protesters are expected to arrive in Denver for the convention Aug. 25 to 28.
