New DNC Protest Group Forms

Section: Denver 2008 DNC Convention Section

DENVER (AP) ― A number of protest groups have formed a new coalition that will organize events during the Democratic National Convention to call for an end to the Iraq War.

The Alliance for Real Democracy consists of 12 local and national groups who say they plan peaceful, nonviolent demonstrations and music during the week of the convention in Denver, Aug. 25-28.

The members of the coalition say the majority of people in the U.S. want to see the Iraq War end. They also accuse the Democratically-controlled Congress of continuing to fund the war.

The new coalition does not include local group Re-create 68, whose commitment to nonviolence has been questioned by some groups.

Re-create 68 says it is a nonviolent group but that it reserves the right to self-defense.
