Obama Picks Director To Serve On DNC Committee

DENVER (CBS4/AP) ―

Sen. Barack Obama has named his campaign's political director to represent him on the committee overseeing operations for the Democratic National Convention.

Obama's campaign announced the new role for political director Matthew Nugen on Sunday.

During the primary campaign season, Nugen served as the chief liaison to elected officials, labor groups and political leaders.

Nugen arrived in Denver Monday to begin working with convention staff and the host committee. CBS4's Terry Jessup tried to get in contact with him, but was told he was in meetings and would not be talking to reporters or have a break to have his picture taken.

Obama is the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee but it won't become official until party members gather for their convention in Denver this August.

Activity was picking up at Obama's campaign headquarters in Denver. The Santa Fe Drive office is attracting new attention now that Sen. Hillary Clinton dropped out of the race.

Doris Manning is one of at least 75 Obama staff volunteers.

"It's kind of like a madhouse, doing voter registration, phoning, anything, so it's really busy right now," Manning said.

Obama's North Carolina stop Monday was part of a two-week tour across the country where he will be talking about his proposed economic policies.
