Former Teacher & Coach Accused In Sex Scandal
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A former Jefferson County teacher and coach has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of evidence tampering.
Nicole Sirbu had been under investigation on allegations of having a sexual relationship with a boy on the pole vaulting team that she coached. Investigators wanted to check her laptop computer for messages, but found a critical piece of it had been removed and replaced. Now she has been indicted by a grand jury on a felony count of tampering with physical evidence by destruction.
Sirbu had been working as a teacher at Stony Creek Elementary School in Jefferson County. She was also employed as a coach for the Columbine and Chatfield high schools' pole vaulters on their track team. The indictment claims Sirbu was under investigation due to allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with a boy on the pole vaulting team.
Sirbu resigned her job as a teacher after learning of the investigation, according to court documents. She then returned a laptop computer to the district. It was then discovered that the original hard drive which stores information was gone and replaced with a new one. Records from a Best Buy store showed that Sirbu had purchased a new hard drive -- the same size as the original one that was missing.
The charges claim numerous emails had been exchanged between Sirbu and boy on the track team using her work laptop.
CBS4's Rick Sallinger left several messages with her attorneys, but did not get a response. The Jefferson County School District said because this involves a criminal indictment, it would not comment at this time.
Sirbu is to due in court next month on the charges.
