Sexual Assault Suspect May Have More Victims

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) ― Investigators in Jefferson County say a man accused of sexual assault was a beloved friend of his young victims and they believe there may be others.

James Craig Bird, 62, is accused of sexually assaulting two boys he met at a church in Aurora. Investigators say Bird gained their trust by acting as a father figure.

Bird works as an aviation consultant who certifies pilots, but police say in his private life he has a long history of putting himself in the company of teenage boys.

Bird's voicemail recording says he's traveling internationally. When he gets back he faces multiple criminal counts of sexual assault on a child.

"We know that since 2004 he's been involved in some sort of illegal relationship with this family and these boys," said Jacki Kelley with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Bird befriended the mother of three teenage boys, became their mentor and father figure and even had sleepovers at his home.

"He kind of became a second care taker for the family, provided some financial support, some braces, clothing," said Kelley.

But recently the youngest of the three boys told his mother Bird had sexually assaulted him and his brother on numerous occasions over the years.

Police searched the home and found evidence that there are other victims.

"Based on information that was found inside of the home, it's not isolated to this family or just these boys," Kelley said.

Bird was arrested in 1997 in Douglas County on suspicion of sexually assaulting a child. The case was later dropped. Bird was accused of abusing three teenaged boys at his home. Apparently he was accused of supplying drugs and alcohol and then touching the boys inappropriately. The allegations were never proven.

We wanted to talk to bird about this and other allegations when we caught him by cell phone.

We tried to contact Craig on his cell phone but when he hung up on us when we told him who was calling.

Neighbors say they are stunned by the allegations.

"What I did know of them they were awfully nice," said neighbor Patty Jones. "Friendly in a neighborly way."

Jefferson County detectives are asking anyone with information about other possible sex assaults involving Bird to give them a call.
