2 Dead, 2 Officers Hurt In Westminster Shootout

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) ― Two bank robbery suspects were killed and two Westminster police officers, Senior Police Officer Sean Chandler and Deputy Chief Tim Carlson, were hurt in a shootout after a chase on Thursday.

The crime scene near 120th and Federal showed dozens of bullet holes in a white vehicle that apparently belonged to the two suspects, who apparently tried to rob a 1st Bank at 120th and Sheridan.

Several minutes later a Westminster officer spotted the suspect vehicle in the Safeway parking lot near 104th Avenue and Federal Boulevard. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects refused to pull over and began shooting at officers as they tried to get away.

Westminster police used a manuever to spin out the car and end the pursuit.
Once the police rammed and disabled the suspects' car, a tremendous gun battle broke out.

"When I seen the silver car kind of spin around, and then I seen cops just jump out and start shootin'," said eyewitness Mary Montoya. "I was screaming out my balcony, screaming, and crying and telling them to stop, stop shooting. It was horrible to see. It was really hard to see. I hope I never have to see something like that again in my life. The shots wouldn't stop and the commotion didn't stop and it was horrible."

The male driver was killed in the shootout. The female passenger in the car was hurt. She was transported to Saint Anthony's Central Hospital and later died from her injuries. Neither suspect has been identified.

Officer Chandler was shot in the hip and transported to Saint Anthony's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Chandler has been with the Westminster Police Dept. since 1998.

Deputy Chief Carlson was also struck by a bullet during the shooting. He did not need treatment. Carlson has been with the Westminster Police Dept. since 1987.

The coroner removed the body of the male suspect from the car about 5:30 Thursday evening.

Officers closed the intersection at noon. Dozens of markers indicating where shell casings had landed were scattered around the scene. The intersection was reopened just after 7 p.m. Thursday.

No one inside the bank was hurt. The suspects did leave the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The FBI is investigating the shootout.
