Security Guard Shoots Alleged Robbery Suspect
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Police were at the scene of a shooting at a check-cashing business at Aurora Tuesday morning. Officers said an alleged suspect was shot by an armed security officer.
Aurora Police Detective Robert Friel told CBS4 News that dispatchers received a robbery alarm from the Check Into Cash location at East 6th Avenue and Chambers Road shortly after 10:00 a.m.
Friel said it's not known whether the security guard was hired by Check Into Cash, another business or happened to be in the business at the time of the robbery. Workers at nearby stores said there have been robberies in the past and that Check Into Cash had added a guard for protection.
"We're just trying to gather information about what occurred in those critical moments," Friel said.
There was a woman working at the business when an armed man walked in and pulled a gun.
"She was confronted by the armed security guard and the armed security guard shot him at least one time," Friel said.
Investigators said the alleged suspect was in grave condition at a local hospital.
Police said they will be determining whether the security guard was justified in using deadly force. They said they are waiting to see if the alleged suspect lives or dies. Police have yet to identify the shooting victim.
The guard is still considered a private citizen when it comes to use of the gun.
"We're getting into the legalities of using deadly force and it's very complicated," Friel said. "So that will be something the detectives and the district attorney's office will be looking at."
A criminologist told CBS4's Alan Gionet that shootings are justifiable if lives are in eminent danger.
"That will take some time to determine; whether or not this was a justified shooting," Friel said.
Police said they will study surveillance tape from inside the store to see just what happened when the shooting occurred.
It will be up to District Attorney Carol Chambers to determine whether there will be charges.
