Immigration Hold Placed On Suspect In Hit & Run

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ― Federal immigration officials have placed a hold on a man being held on vehicular homicide charges in the deaths of three people, including a boy killed while buying ice cream.

Immigration officials say it appears that 23-year-old Francis Maudaniel Hernandez was born outside the country. ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok says the detainer means that Hernandez will be released to immigration authorities if the state releases him.

Hernandez is accused of running a red light in his SUV, hitting a pickup truck, which was sent hurtling into an Aurora ice cream store. The two women in the pickup were killed instantly and a boy in the store died later of his injuries.

Authorities say Hernandez, arrested after fleeing the scene, has an extensive criminal record.
