Attacker In Nederland Wore 'Scream' Mask
NEDERLAND, Colo. (AP/CBS4) ―
Police say a masked assailant broke into a Nederland woman's home on Halloween night and slashed her with a knife.
The attack happened just after 10 Saturday night, when the woman said she went to the door to see what a person wearing a mask from the movie "Scream" wanted.
The assailant apparently forced open the door and attacked the woman with a knife, cutting her arms and face. The victim's dogs came to the room, and the masked assailant then ran away without taking anything.
"She did see him holding a knife at some point and believes that is what he or she may have struck her with," Sgt Jake Adler with Nederland police said. "She retrieved a large wooden mallet that was within close proximity to her when she had gone to the floor and began swinging at her attacker with the large wooden mallet."
The woman wasn't sure whether the assailant was a man or a woman. The victim was taken to the hospital for stitches but wasn't seriously hurt.
Neighbors said hundreds of trick-or-treaters came to the neighborhood.
"You know if you are ever going to get into a house at 10:30 p.m., last night would have been the night," neighbor Sylvia Smith said. "That's why it's disturbing."
Nederland police say they have a strong lead but can't comment without comprising the investigation.
