Denver Police Arrest 2 After Toddler's Death

DENVER (CBS4/AP) ― Denver police have arrested a woman and her boyfriend in the death of a toddler who they said died in a case of child abuse.

Police say officers went to a hospital late Friday on a report of a burned child. Doctors pronounced 2-year-old Elijah Archuleta dead shortly after officers arrived.

It happened in the 900 block of South Osage Streeet.

Police say the child's 23-year-old mother, Isela Reyes-Talamantes, and her 24-year-old boyfriend, John Vigil, are being held for investigation of first-degree murder.

"It's just terrible how this could happen to someone that young," neighbor Andy Archuletta said. "I don't know that circumstances of it, but if the parents are involved, you know, why?"

"Anytime children are hurt, you're taken aback by it," Sonny Jackson with Denver police said.

Coroner's officials have not yet released a cause of death, pending an autopsy.

Police have started looking for the Elijah's biological father.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said Saturday that no other details were being immediately released, including how the child was burned.
