Many motorists don't pay much attention to it, but tire pressure can be important an important safety factor on the road.
Too little pressure can literally lead to crashes, warns Early Show consumer correspondent Susan Koeppen. And underinflated tires tend to wear out more quickly.
Proper tire pressure leads to better gas mileage, which can save you money on gas, she points out.
But, Koeppen says, the No. 1 reason to keep close tabs on tire pressure is to stay safe. Underinflated and overinflated tires can lead to accidents on the road, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NHTSA recommends you check tire pressure at least once a month using a tire pressure gauge. Make sure the car hasn't been driven for at least three hours so you get an accurate reading.
To know how much air pressure to put in your tires, look at the label on the driver's door jamb or in the owner's manual, Koeppen says. Don't use the tire pressure information on the tire itself.
