Prepaid Cell Phones Dial Up New Business

DENVER (CBS4) ― The recession has dialed up a shift in the cell phone market.

No contract. No credit check. No strings attached. That's an offer that is looking very attractive these days to a growing number of cell phone customers. The prepaid cell phone market has enjoyed a 13-percent growth in recent months.

While traditional cell phone contracts still rule the marketplace, the pay-as-you-go market is perfect for people with poor credit, or an uncertain financial future. Those who are out of work need a phone as they job hunt and potential employers need to contact them.

But, why not spend $30 a month at a place like Cricket instead of locking into a standard two-year contract?

At Cricket, for example, the $30 will get unlimited talk time. When canceling service, there is no penalty. Texting, voice mail, call forwarding, voicemail and caller ID runs a flat rate of $40 per month. More perks will bump up the price. The most expensive pay-as-you-go plan CBS4 found at Cricket was $60 a month. It includes all the bells and whistles plus Internet service.

It's also possible to bundle services at Cricket and go online at home.

Cricket customer Vanessa Alba says her favorite part about the pre-paid service is, "there are no billing surprises, no unexpected fees or overage penalties. I pay the same every month and it helps me budget".
