A chain email that says people should avoid buying gift cards from big name retailers like Ann Taylor, Eddie Bauer, Macy's and more because they're going bankruptcy is not true.
Some locations of well-known stores are closing because of the slow economy, but those businesses are staying in business and will still accept gift cards.
"Everything I read in the email was untrue," said Steve Garvin, a district manager for GAP.
"We already have a lack of trust in our market place, said Jean Herman of the Denver Better Business Bureau. "Everybody is cautious, worried about spending money and a hoax like this, makes it worse."
The vast majority of chain emails sent around the Internet are not true.
