Colorado Home Produces More Power Than It Uses

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) ― A company in the Colorado mountains is building a home unlike any other. It will be so energy efficient it won't need to be hooked up to the power grid.

"The home will actually produce more energy in any given year than it will consume," home builder John Rath said.

When it's finished it will be an 8,000 square foot "net zero" house, putting more energy back into the system than it uses.

"It's a 17 kilowatt system that's been modeled to get to achieve the zero net energy," Rath said.

The roof will be covered in solar panels. Geothermal tubes will both heat and cool the house and thick insulation on every wall will make it run efficiently. The system will all work together with electronics.

"If the energy monitor says that it's pulling too much energy, it will reset the heat thermostats down, as well as the lighting, it will go down 15 or 20 percent."

Even before it's completed the house will be built on its own power.

"As soon as those systems will be installed to the infrastructure that's in place, then it will start producing its own energy."

Homebuilders say the technology is not just for luxury homes and it could start showing up in smaller homes in the near future.
