Experts: Shred Credit Card Convenience Checks

DENVER (CBS4) ― Experts are warning credit card users about discarding convenience checks into the garbage without shredding them first. The checks can easily be used by criminals to buy thousands of dollars in merchandise and leave the consumer holding the bill.

"Once they have these convenience checks, they're much easier to use than credit cards because although credit cards require a signature verification, these convenience checks don't," said Kevin Hyland of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

CBS4 sent interns into garbage cans and dumpsters near the TV station to look for undestroyed convenience checks. It took them less than an hour to find a set of five with a credit limit of $5,000.

"You have to be more careful these days," said Hyland. "Absolutely, identity thieves are looking for these. These are like gold for them."

Experts said to invest in a shredder. The CBI said credit card holders can also call the 1-800 number on the back of the card and ask to have the checks stopped.
