Earlier this year nearly 700,000 cars were traded in under the cash for clunkers program.
Those cars were supposed to go to the scrapyard, but now there are concerns some of them may be showing up for sale illegally, CBS station KDKA-TV reports.
Carfax, the nation's leading provider of vehicle history information, obtained vehicle identification or VIN numbers for all of the cars traded in under Cash for Clunkers.
"Our preliminary analysis shows that some of these cars are back on the road and are being driven or offered for sale to used car buyers," said Carfax Communications Director Larry Gamache.
Gamache says Carfax has created a searchable database on their Web site where prospective used car dealers can type in the VIN number for any car they're considering buying and get back a free report that says whether the car was part of the Cash for Clunkers program or not.
"We wanted to alert consumers to the fact that clunkers may be out on the road and you're going to want to take steps to protect yourself," said Gamache.
