Colorado Attorney General John Suthers told CBS4 the calls are a scam.
State and federal officials are taking steps to stop annoying, scam phone calls warning consumers that their auto warranty is about to expire. They calls come at all times of the day and night. No one is immune to them.
The Federal Trade Commission has adopted new rules that ban prerecorded telemarketing calls, but it doesn't take effect until September 2009.
CBS4 tried to track down some of the companies behind the phone calls, but had little luck.
Colorado Attorney General John Suthers' office was able to find one of the companies.
"They are never in the state they tell you they are in," Suthers said.
The trail led to the Dallas suburb of Carrollton, Texas. The state issued a cease and desist order that shut down a company called Credit Account Relief and another nearby called MLE Marketing.
Many people have received the automated calls, even the Better Business Bureau.
"When they find out they are calling the BBB, there is a long pause then generally they hang up," said Melanie Lewis of the BBB.
One man has become so annoyed by the calls he finally had to resort to paying about $8 a month to have certain numbers blocked from calling his home. He took the measure after registering on the Do Not Call list and changing his phone number.
