Lawmakers Aim To Improve Renters' Rights In Colo.

DENVER (CBS4) ― State lawmakers will start considering a bill next week that would take aim at bad landlords.

Colorado is currently one of only two states in which landlords have no legal obligation to provide livable conditions for their tenants.

The new legislation would also give renters the right to fix problems themselves and deduct the cost from their rent.

"What we're just trying to do is insure that Colorado's residents have a guarantee that the place that they live is going to have four walls and a roof that doesn't leak, and they're going to have heat and plumbing that works and hot and cold running water," said state Rep. Mike Merrifield, D-Manitou Springs.

Landlord groups said the bill goes too far and would hurt efforts to provide affordable housing.

"Good property owners that are trying to provide quality housing to Coloradans would be captured and punished by this bill," said Daniel Sung of the Colorado Apartment Association.

The measure is scheduled to get a vote in committee next week.
