The wintery weather that we've already seen in the fall, as well as this weekend, has put some spikes in preseason pass sales for ski areas, as well as merchandise sales.
Some vendors at the 18th Annual Ski and Snowboard Expo going on at the Convention Center in downtown Denver this weekend say they've seen strong crowds and strong interest in picking up ski and snowboard gear for this upcoming ski season.
"You wake up and you think, 'Oh yeah, I wanted to buy a new coat', or 'Oh yeah, I need to get some new ski boots,'" said Ken Gart, Specialty Sports President. "I think it just gets people in the mood."
While the weather may have been one draw for the crowds at the expo, the deals that they can find are another strong draw. Merchandise at the expo is anywhere from 40 to 75 percent off.
"I think it's all about value," said Gart. "People want to ski, they want to be able to vacation with their family and get up there, but they also want a good deal. That's the reason that the expo is good because it's all about saving money and looking for bargains."
Shoppers also have the advantage of spending quality time with equipment representatives who can be more knowledgeable than some store employees; and who can spend more time discussing what kind of gear someone may need if they want to get out and ski and snowboard this winter. They're also able to talk about the newest technology and gear in the industry.
"We've been showing here for years and it's so much fun because you finally get a chance to really meet one-on-one with the consumer," said Joe Decker, a representative with Technica Ski Boots. "They love taking to the reps. It gives us a chance to talk to them directly. They can ask us intricate questions that we might be able to answer. Some shops may not have that background or knowledge."
The expo runs through Sunday. It's open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
