Denver Metro Bookstore Turns New Page In Business

DENVER (CBS4) ― The Tattered Cover Bookstore announces a big policy change in order to weather this difficult economy.

For more than three decades, the name Tattered Cover Book Store has been a bit of a misnomer, no tattered books here. Customers often found it baffling.

"I came here expecting they would have used books because the name was Tattererd Cover" says a customer browsing for books.

The bookstore which is famous for its service and its selection has only sold new books, with crisp pages and an enticing new book smell.

"The Tattered Cover has been talking about selling used books for about thirty years" said Neil Strandberg, Director of Operations for the bookstore.

It seems the time has come to turn the page on tradition and start selling used books alongside the new covers. Retail sales are off, and across the country people are reading less.

"Fiscal '09 was a tough one because of the economic downtown" said Strandberg.

Customers are quick to applaud the idea.

"It's the same material, why not buy a used book."

We ask one young customer if it will make him more likely to buy a book today. "Definitely" he said with book in hand.

Another customer is quick to note the difference in price of a coffee table art book he is thinking of buying. New it would be $30. Used, it's half the price at $15.

Readers with stacks of books to sell can bring in their gently tattered pages any Tuesday through Thursday at any of the three metro area Tattered Cover Bookstores.
