Intel Plant's Run In Colorado Springs Extended
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ―
Intel Corp.'s plant here, originally slated to end production in October, now will keep making computer chips until January, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The semiconductor manufacturer credited stronger-than-expected demand for parts used in the company's Centrino line of Wi-Fi chips.
The plant has 400 employees.
Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., announced plans in January to close the plant if a buyer couldn't be found. At the time the plant employed 1,000.
Now Intel is trying to temporarily retain workers who were scheduled to transfer to other facilities, Intel spokeswoman Judy Cara said.
The 400 remaining plant employees will be eligible for Intel's year-end bonus and retirement plan payments. More than half of them will stay after production ends to complete the closure of the plant, Cara said.
