Road Building Company Benefits From Stimulus Funds

Colorado Construction Jobs Created, Saved with Stimulus Funds

Written by Paul Day
DENVER (CBS4) ― A long-time Colorado company in the road building business has been awarded nearly $50 million in federal stimulus funds for state highway projects.

"We're very fortunate," said Don Hanneman, Co-owner of Castle Rock Construction Company.

Hanneman says it means 150 workers at CRCC will avoid being laid off. The federal funding also enables the construction company to hire several new workers.

"I was worried," admitted Alison Barber, newly-hired foreman at CRCC who graduated last month from Colorado State University. She majored in construction management.

"A lot of my classmates didn't get jobs right out of college and I think it really helped that the stimulus project focused on highway construction." added Barber.

There is $404 million dollars coming to Colorado for highway projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and $201 million has already been committed to companies like CRCC, according to Stacey Stegman, Spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

All of the money must be under contract by March of 2010. But it's impossible at this point to estimate exactly how many jobs will be created or saved across the state, according to Stegman.

CRCC is just breaking ground on a project involving two giant roundabouts at the intersection of Interstate 76 and 96th Avenue in Adams County.

Hanneman says the federal dollars mean his company will continue to survive in a rough economy.

"I have friends, competitors, that have zero work right now and are looking at trying to keep their doors open." Hanneman said.

Besides helping his own workforce, Hanneman says the stimulus funding will also benefit dozens of employees with subcontractors.

For Barber, the stimulus guarantees she'll be getting a paycheck.

"I'm engaged, so it definitely means starting a life, starting a family," 23-year-old Barber said.
