ESPN Zone Shuts Down In Denver

DENVER (CBS4) ― The economy has forced the closure of another Downtown Denver restaurant.

The ESPN Zone has shut down. Representatives with ESPN and Disney Regional Entertainment announced on Monday the franchise in the 16th Street Mall's Tabor Center would close.

"The overall economics of continuing this operation were very challenging," said Regynald Washington with Disney Regional Entertainment in a prepared statement. "We have enjoyed being a partner of the Denver community for the past eight years. We thank our loyal patrons and believe we provided our customers with a great experience."

"A decision like this is never easy," said Rick Alessandri with ESPN. "We recognize and appreciate the commitment and years of service of all of these employees. Unfortunately, the current economic environment offered us no other choice."

ESPN Zone opened in December of 2001. It employed about 100 people. Those workers will get a 60-day administrative leave package.
