Closed Bridal Store Now Under Investigation

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ― The bridal store that took customers' money but never delivered the dresses is now under investigation.

Police in Fort Collins are now hoping to connect brides with their gowns and move dresses from the evidence lockup to the wedding chapel.

Mountain Avenue Bridal is completely empty now after police seized the wedding gowns that were still on the racks when the shop originally closed.

"I ordered it last October and they said it would be here by January," bride-to-be Julie Parsley said.

Parsley's wedding dress still hasn't arrived. She's getting married in three weeks.

"We have paid $1,200 already. We still have about $500 more to pay," Parsley said.

"Right now we have received 51 complaints from brides, or brides-to-be, about wedding dresses that were ordered and have not been received," said Rita Davis, Fort Collins Police Spokesperson.

Police in Fort Collins are investigating and have seized dozens of wedding dresses that were left on the racks at the shut-down bridal shop.

"We have about 51 of these dresses in our evidence room," Davis said. "What we're trying to do is we're trying to match those brides-to-be who have receipts paid-in-full, with the actual dresses."

Davis says at first investigators considered complaints against Mountain Avenue Bridal to be a civil matter, but as more angry brides came forward, police launched a criminal investigation.

"It's a little premature for us to speculate on what those charges are, however it could be something like theft," Davis said.

Police are trying to find out if the bridal business just went bad, or if the store owner intended to take the money and run.

"I don't think she was intentionally deceptive at first, but I don't know what happened after that," Parsley said.

Police say they've spoken with an attorney for the store owner and were trying to set up an interview with the owner.

The wedding dresses in police evidence are from the store racks and are not the custom dresses which the brides had ordered.
