The town of Breckenridge just spent a $250,000, even though they may be losing money.
A new economic forecast shows the ski community could lose $38 million as visitors cut back their trips, or choose not to ski at all. But the infusion of cash is being used to bring business back.
More skiers visit Breckenridge than any other town in Colorado, but reservations are down 20 percent this year, significantly more than other ski towns.
"We just want to maintain enough market shares so that our businesses can get through this time and hopefully to a better economic time," Jeffrey Bergeron with Breckenridge Town Council said.
"The main message right now is really going to be that we have availability," Peyton Rodgers with Resort Quest said. "Normally in years past at this time the town is sold out for holiday season."
The lodging community will take a huge hit if low expectations for destination travelers come true.
Restaurants won't know how bad the year will be until after the holiday.
"Thanksgiving weekend will tell us a lot and then Christmas week is very important to us," restaurant owner Dick Carlton said.
