General Steel Whistle-Blower Awarded $1.4 Million
GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) ―
A Jefferson County jury has awarded a former General Steel Corporation employee $1.4 million after she was fired for accusing the company of fraud and illegal sales practices.
Sandra Simmons, who was a manager of the Lakewood-based company's accounting department, was fired from her job in 2003 when she reported several irregularities to company owner Jeffrey W. Knight.
The jury ruled late Friday in Simmons' favor on each of the eight claims she brought against General Steel, including wrongful discharge and outrageous conduct.
General Steel sells steel buildings. The company last year settled a consumer-protection case that the Colorado attorney general's office had filed for $4.5 million.
Simmons has since moved to the Houston area.
