Colorado Town Suspends Fight With Qwest -- For Now

SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) ― Silverton town officials have withdrawn their complaint to state regulators about Qwest Communications' service for now, but say they're not going away.

The southwestern Colorado mountain town filed a complaint in May with the state Public Utilities Commission saying that Qwest hasn't provided a fiber-optic connection to the town as required. Town officials say they weren't aware of all the procedures at the time and want to make sure any filing has the best chance of succeeding.

Denver-based Qwest signed a contract with the state in 2000 to hook up all county seats to a high-speed network.

Silverton is the San Juan County seat.

Qwest says the digital radio system that serves the town is more than adequate.
