Orton, Simms Compete For Starting Job

Written By Broncos Insider Gary Miller
DENVER (CBS4) ― The Broncos don't have a full blown controversy yet but they do have two quarterbacks who hope to earn the starting job this season. Kyle Orton certainly is the favorite to win the job,  but Chris Simms knows his chances improved dramatically when the Broncos shipped Jay Cutler to Chicago.

"I want to play, that's my main goal, " Simms said. "I wasn't going to approach it any different whether it's Jay or Kyle."

But Cutler was the undisputed starter, that's not the case with Orton.
"I'm just another quarterback on the team," Orton said. "The best players will play, coach has made that clear."

Orton is the favorite because he's the key player in the trade with the Bears. Coach Josh McDaniels picked him over the likes of Jason Campbell and Brady Quinn. He's also proven he can win. He was 21-12 as a starter in Chicago.

Simms hasn't played football in nearly two years since he suffered a ruptured spleen and it was surgically removed. He's healthy now and ready to resume his career. If Orton falters, Simms will get the chance he's been waiting for. Both want the job and both will now get the chance to earn it.
