DENVER (CBS4) ― Turnover was high at the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders tryouts this year.

The final judging was held on Sunday at Invesco Field at Mile High, with 60 women competing for 34 spots.

In addition to dancing, cheerleader candidates had to go through an interview process where several showed off their singing talents. Among the judges was CBS4's Vic Lombardi, who kept finalists on their toes with some humorous questions.

After confirming that one candidate was a good singer, Lombardi sang a random note and asked "What note am I hitting here?"

Each year, all the cheerleaders from the previous year's squad have to try out again. That keeps things very competitive, according to veteran cheerleader Laura Sobon.

"I'd say we're all intimidated -- everyone is," Sobon said. "You need to work hard for your spot, and it's not guaranteed you'll come back. The bar is raised every year, and you need to make sure you raise with it."

More than 250 young women tried out to be a cheerleader a week ago during open tryouts. One cheerleader in tryouts danced for the NBA in New Orleans and lost her home in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The new squad of cheerleaders features 14 fresh faces, including the first Japanese-born Broncos cheerleader.

"It's been quite a process, but I think it's worth it," new cheerleader Lauren Gardner said after learning she was selected. "It's an amazing bunch of women. I can't believe I'm part of the team."

The Denver Broncos Cheerleaders perform at Broncos' games as well and at numerous events and charity functions throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
