DENVER (CBS4) - With the Pittsburgh Steelers in town for a huge Monday Night Football matchup, John Elway couldn't help but reminisce about some of the most memorable Monday night games of his career.
The first game that came to Elway's mind was when Joe Montana led the Kansas City Chiefs into Mile High Stadium on Oct. 17, 1994. The Chiefs came from behind to beat the Broncos 31-28. It was Kansas City head coach Marty Schottenheimer's first career win in Denver in eight tries. Montana had been 0-3 in Denver.
The Broncos were down 24-21 in the fourth quarter when Elway led a drive that resulted in a touchdown, giving Denver a 28-24 lead with only 1:29 to play. It turned out to be too much time as Joe Montana took the Chiefs down the field with great clock management and Willie Davis caught the game-winning touchdown with only 8 seconds left on the clock.
"Any time you're playing a guy like that you always had to concern yourself (with leaving too much time) and he's done it so many times," Elway said. "That was one of the great things that Montana did. He was always on great football teams, but so many times, even when he was in college, he had a knack to bring teams back."
Another Monday Night Football game that Elway recalled was against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 16, 1987 when the Bears were just two years out from winning the Super Bowl and still an NFL powerhouse after going 14-2 in 1986. They came into the game 7-1 and the Broncos were 4-3-1. Elway threw for 341 yards and the Broncos beat the Bears 31-29. The Broncos went on to win six of their final seven games and went on to lose in the Super Bowl.
"That was also a high-scoring affair that we were able to win," Elway said.
Some say Pittsburgh's quarterback Ben Roethlisberger reminds them of Elway and when he thinks of a current quarterback that compares to him, Elway agrees.
"He's obviously a guy with a lot of talent. He's had a lot of success early in his career," Elway said. "It isn't always pretty in what he does, but he gets the job done and makes the plays when he has to. So he would probably be the guy in my mind who is the closest."
Elway says he really likes Phillip Rivers as well, despite the bad blood between Rivers and the Broncos.
"I really like him even though he did kind of get into it with Cutler and turn some people sideways. I think that he's a great competitor and fights to the end, the guys play hard for him
so I have a lot of respect for him
he's a great quarterback already and he's going to continue to be throughout his career."
The Broncos travel to the nation's capitol next Sunday to take on the Washington Redskins. The game can be seen at 11 a.m. on CBS4. Former Broncos running back Clinton Portis is not expected to play after taking a blow to the head from Atlanta Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud in a 31-17 loss.
