DENVER (CBS4) ―
CBS4's Vic Lombardi sat down with Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler last week to talk about Brandon Marshall, John Elway and the team's plans for the NFL draft.
Cutler said his comments criticizing wide receiver Brandon Marshall's off-the-field behavior were not premeditated.
"I knew it was going to be asked, but I wasn't really sure what I was going to say," Cutler said. "When those questions started flying, some emotions came out and I said things how I felt."
Cutler said he thought Marshall was probably a little shaken up about it.
"I just felt some of those things needed to be said, because we've had some guys in the past that have gotten in trouble and we kind of take care of it inside," he said. "It's one of those things. We just can't have it anymore."
Cutler said he's seen Marshall a couple of times since he first made the comments.
"He's a little bit mad at me, but he's going to get over it," he said. "We talked today and things are good."
Last week, John Elway told the press at an Arena League news conference that he understood why Cutler recently called out Marshall, but he just wouldn't have taken the same approach.
"If that's what Jay feels like he needs to comment on, he needs to do that," Elway said. "Personally, I wouldn't have done it to him. Even though I tried to settle things in the press, looking back over the years, it hasn't been the right way to do it."
Cutler said it's been a mixed bag on the feelings about his comments. He said some agree and some don't, but if he had to do it all over again, he would say the same thing.
Cutler also talked about the state of the team. He said as players, they can't worry about people talking about the Broncos having a bad year.
"What they do in the front office and what kind of decisions Mike makes; that's up to them," he said. "We've got to take care of our stuff and right now we're just working out hard and trying to get in shape for some of the mini-camps."
Cutler said he would like the team go after a couple offensive players in the upcoming draft.
Lombardi brought up the fact that when 'Jay Cutler' is entered in google.com, a body builder is the first site that shows up. Cutler said he was familiar with the man.
"I saw him on ESPN when I was like ten," he said.
