Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway joins CBS4 Sports Insiders Vic Lombardi and Gary Miller on their ESPN Radio 1600 show every week to talk Broncos. His Monday Morning Quarterback segment can be heard at 8 a.m.
DENVER (CBS4) - John Elway describes the Broncos 2009 team as a "streak-y" team, and now that they are back on a hot streak it's the best possible time for them to be facing a team with a quarterback whom he calls the league's best.
Even if they lose to the undefeated Colts in Indianapolis next Sunday, the outlook looks good for the Broncos to make the playoffs. The Colts certainly won't be looking past the Broncos, though, and Sunday's game provides a great opportunity for Denver, according to Elway.
"For them to do well in the playoffs they are going to have to beat good football teams on the road and this will be good test," Elway said. They'll be going into Indianapolis against arguably the best team in the AFC."
Although Elway has said in the past he'd vote for Tom Brady as the best quarterback in the league, currently he thinks he'd hand the MVP award to Peyton Manning. Elway says Manning is benefiting greatly once again this season from being in an offensive system where he knows every little detail and is surrounded by a talented coaching staff.
That certainly can't be said for Matt Cassel of the Chiefs, who threw two interceptions in Sunday's big 44-13 loss to the Broncos. Elway says Cassel, who arrived in Kansas City in the offseason after a spectacular season with New England, has got his hands full.
"It goes to show that if you're a quarterback and you don't have good people around you, it's very difficult to be successful and I don't think any quarterback could go into that situation that they have in Kansas City right now and be very successful."
Similarly, Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton is still getting used to the offensive system in Denver and it showed in his three turnovers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. On the bright side, one thing that finally started working the way the team hoped was Orton getting the ball to Brandon Marshall on "bubble" screen pass plays.
"I think the thought process there is you just want to get a great player out in space and let him make a play. So you're just trying to get the ball in his hands and if he breaks one tackle they you're going to have a big play like you had yesterday."
Elway said he thinks the Broncos are entering a time in the season when they really have to be playing their best football. So far that's the been the case for both them and next Sunday's opponent, although all the talk about the Colts going undefeated could become something of a hindrance for them.
"What the pressure of (trying to go undefeated) does is take your focus off your main goal, which is win the Super Bowl," Elway said.
On an emotional note, Elway says he was saddened this weekend to learn of Broncos fan Tim McKernan's death. When Elway came into the league, McKernan -- the "Barrel Man" -- was already an institution at Mile High Stadium.
"We'll miss him. He was a great part of the Bronco history and a demonstrator of the loyal fans that we do have."
