DENVER (AP) ― Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler says he empathizes with his Green Bay counterpart Aaron Rodgers, charged with taking over the Packers after Brett Favre's departure.

At the same time, Cutler has offered sobering words to the fourth-year quarterback being asked to take over for a Green Bay legend: That as long as Rodgers wears a Packer's uniform, he will always hear about Favre.

"I can't imagine being in that situation of having a guy like Brett Favre and what he's done, his accomplishments and having to take over for him," Cutler said Tuesday, days before the Broncos host the Packers for a preseason game Friday.

Cutler acknowledged to having had a much easier time when he took over as the starting quarterback in 2006, his rookie season, when he replaced Jake Plummer.

"Jake didn't make as big a deal and Brett has," Cutler said. "He went quietly and that's the kind of guy Jake is. He's a first class guy who knew what was going on and he wanted out anyway."

Still, Cutler said Rodgers is handling the situation well.

Cutler said he has been following the quarterback saga of the Packers closely, starting with Favre's tearful retirement, his announcement later that he still wanted to play, and then his trade to the New York Jets.

"I have been talking to Aaron since the whole thing has been blown up," Cutler said. "I met him and started talking to him when things started getting crazy for him."

"He's a good guy," Cutler continued. "We've talked about things a couple of times a week to see how things are going."

There's even been some goodhearted jabs exchanged between the two in recent weeks.

"If he throws a pick I give him some trouble and likewise he fires something at me if I throw one," Cutler said.
