Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway joins CBS4 Sports Insiders Vic Lombardi and Gary Miller on their ESPN Radio 1600 show every week to talk Broncos. His Monday Morning Quarterback segment can be heard at 8 a.m.
DENVER (CBS4) - With the Denver Broncos on a bye week, John Elway took the opportunity on his Monday Morning Quarterback segment on ESPN Radio 1600 to talk a little baseball and admitted, to Gary Miller's dismay, that he is a New York Yankees fan.
"You have to pick between Boston and New York and I'd much rather take New York," Elway said. "I played for them that one summer way back when, so I like them."
Elway was referring to the minor league stint he played for the Yankees before he began playing in the NFL.
"The funny thing is that I had dinner with George Steinbrenner. Kind of an interesting guy; different than you would expect; very likable guy," Elway said. "That was back in like 1981, believe it or not."
Elway was drafted by the Yankees in the second round after batting .361 at Stanford.
"I went back there and saw a game when I was trying to figure out if I was going to sign or not with the Yankees. I had to sign before I started school that year, which was 1981. So I went back to watch a game, had dinner with (Steinbrenner), and sat in his box. He was a very likable guy."
Elway actually played two summers in the Yankees organization after signing in 1981.
"I appreciated him giving me the opportunity and at that point in time they were, and still are, a great organization."
But Elway said his passion was football. He said he spent more time on football and liked the quarterback position better than he liked playing right field in baseball. However, Elway said if he wasn't traded out of Baltimore he would have played baseball for another year.
"I kind of backed myself into a corner and committed to that. If Baltimore had not traded me, I would have played baseball then gone back into the (NFL) draft the following year."
Everything else is history after the Colts traded Elway to the Broncos in the 1983 draft.
